Why this Coach needs a Coach…
I need a coach. Actually, that’s not strictly true on two counts. First, I don’t actually need a coach. Nobody does. We need air, food and drink, some clothes, somewhere to live, but we’ve rubbed along as a human race for thousands of years without coaches (not very well, mind). More accurately, I want a coach.
And when I say a coach, I should really say another coach, because I already have one. It’s just that I want another one.
What’s wrong with my current coach? Absolutely nothing, she’s superb. I’ve been working with my coach for well over a year. In that time, she helped me discover my ‘why’, elicited my most important values, coached me through my vision, purpose and strategy. We’ve identified my identity, my marketplace, competition, long-term objectives and ideal customers. We’ve set sales goals, a marketing plan with measures, looked at my beliefs around selling, networking, pitching and presenting. Phew!
So, why do I want another coach? Good question! Well, first and foremost, I simply want to be the best coach I can be. This isn’t an ego trip and I’ve little interest in making great oodles of cash, which I know is bad news to all those kind people always getting in touch and promising to add six figures to my income.
What I am interested in, actually fascinated by, is the long-term development of people, including me. I’ve seen and experienced the effect that fantastic coaching has, on clients and others I have met who have worked with a coach. I’ve seen the transformation in personal and professional lives, the rapid injection of confidence and the end of living an indecisive, directionless, half-hearted existence.
And I know, that if I want to continue to improve as a coach, I have to work with the best. I have to have a coach who will go deep with me, help me to see my blind spots, challenge my self-deception, hold nothing back when challenging me, but still be my best friend, my advocate and my confidante.
Therefore, I’m looking for a coach who’s a lot like me. I don’t mean a Prog rock fan who has an irritating habit of laughing at his own jokes (although that would be cool!). But, as Simon Sinek said, the goal is, not to do business with everybody who needs what you have; it’s to do business with people who believe what you believe.
So, my coach has to have my growth and development as a priority. They need to be an extraordinary listener. They will need to completely get who I am and what I’m looking to accomplish. They will hold nothing back in challenging me, but always see the positives.
They will help me see what I currently cannot see; they will champion my authenticity and support me in speaking my truth. But they also need to be pragmatic, helping me to continue to grow my business and create clients from people who believe in what I believe.
And, of course, they have to be fun. They have to know, like I know, that the best way of working, the best way of living, is to be able to laugh, to enjoy the day and the longer journey.
I need a coach, I want a coach. I want a brilliant coach. Do you know one? Are you one?
